![]() The biggest problem is if you can't see the freeway, due to walls, knowing how fast to accelerate to. I've never had a problem accelerating, even though I drive a large SUV. My guess is that's an HOV lane & touted as one of the perks of being HOV. I've never heard of or seen one where 1 lane stays green. When I lived in Mpls, they were still 2 lanes, but the green alternated between the 2 lanes, which made a lot more sense. In Denver, both lanes turn green at the same time, so the 2 cars have to merge before entering the freeway. It doesn't matter if the freeway is moving at posted speeds (2:30) or at a complete standstill (5pm). In Denver they come on around 2:30 or 3 & stay on through rush hour. It's got nothing to do with sensing the traffic on the freeway. Where I've seen them, they just seem to be timed.
